Bran Castle ("Dracula's Castle") 2026: Tickets, Opening Hours, the Dracula Myth and How to Get There
In short: Bran Castle, sold to the world as "Dracula's Castle", stands in the Bran pass in Transylvania, about 25 km south-west of Brașov and about 200 km from Bucharest. It is open every day. From 1 November to 31 March the hours are Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–18:00 and Monday 12:00–18:00 (the closing time is the last entry). An adult Standard Tour ticket costs 100 lei (about €19) in November–December 2026. Buy tickets on the official site, bran-castle.com: several look-alike websites are not the official site. And the short answer to the question most visitors ask: Bran is not really Dracula's castle, but it is well worth the visit.
This guide is for international visitors planning a trip to Bran Castle in Romania, on a day trip from Bucharest or from a base in Brașov. It covers the Dracula myth and the real Dracula castle, opening hours, 2026 ticket prices, how to recognise the official ticket website, a short history and the drive there. Facts last checked on 4 November 2026.
Is Bran Castle really Dracula's castle?
Not in any historical sense. The "Dracula's castle" label is largely a modern association created by tourism and film. Here is what is known:
- Bram Stoker's novel does not mention Bran. There is also no evidence that Stoker ever visited Transylvania.
- Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, is the historical figure linked to the Dracula name. Most historians agree that he never lived at Bran. He passed through the Bran gorge several times, but that is the extent of the connection.
- The castle's real story is about Saxon merchants, a mountain pass between two medieval principalities, and a Romanian queen who made it her favourite home (see the history below).
Where is the real Dracula castle?
The fortress genuinely linked to Vlad the Impaler is Poenari, at Arefu in Argeș County, which he repaired around 1459. Today it is a ruin on a cliff above the Argeș canyon, beside the Transfăgărășan road, and you reach it by climbing about 1,480 steps. Poenari is a separate trip from Bran, best combined with the Transfăgărășan, which is open only in summer. Our section-by-section Transfăgărășan guide covers that drive.
So if you want the castle from the legend, visit Bran. If you want the fortress of the historical Dracula, visit Poenari.

The official Bran Castle website vs look-alike sites
Search for "Bran Castle tickets" and you will find several websites with very similar names, such as brancastle.co, brancastle.com.ro, thebrancastle.com or brancastletickets.com. These are not the official site. Some sell tickets or tours with a markup, others send you on through affiliate links.
The official website is bran-castle.com, run by the Bran Domain Management Company, which manages the castle.
How to buy Bran Castle tickets online
- Go to bran-castle.com and open the tickets page. Check the address bar: bran-castle.com, with the hyphen.
- Choose your date and the ticket type: Standard Tour, or a combo with the Time Tunnel and the Torture exhibit.
- Select the number of adults, children, students or seniors, and pay online.
- Keep the ticket on your phone. Students and seniors should bring the card or ID that proves the discount.
In busy periods tickets often sell out in advance, so buy online on the official site as soon as your date is fixed.
Inside Bran Castle: what the visit includes
The Standard Tour takes you through the castle itself. Its real story is less about vampires and more about royalty: after 1920 Bran became Queen Marie's favourite home, and she renovated it.
The combo tickets add two separate attractions:
- The Time Tunnel, also sold as a 30 lei add-on.
- The Torture exhibit (Torture Rooms), also sold as a 30 lei add-on.
If you want the castle without the extras, the Standard Tour is enough. If you want the full experience, choose a combo ticket or add the extras you are interested in.
Bran Castle history in brief
- 1377: the Saxons of Brașov (Kronstadt) began building the stone castle, under a privilege from King Louis I of Hungary. It defended the pass and later served as a customs post between Transylvania and Wallachia.
- After 1920: the city of Brașov gave the castle to the Romanian royal house. It became Queen Marie's favourite home, and she renovated it.
- 1948: the castle was seized by the communist regime.
- 2006: it was returned to the heirs of Princess Ileana.
- 2009: since then it has been managed by Archduke Dominic of Austria-Tuscany and his sisters, and it opened as a private museum on 1 June 2009.
Where is Bran Castle and how to get there by car
Bran Castle is in Transylvania, in the Bran pass, at about 760 metres altitude and about 25 km south-west of Brașov.
| From | Distance | Approx. driving time | Route |
| Brașov | about 25–30 km | about 40 min | South-west from Brașov to Bran |
| Bucharest | about 200 km | about 3–3.5 h | DN1 through the Prahova Valley, then via Brașov |
From Bucharest, the DN1 is slow on Friday evenings, Sunday afternoons and winter weekends. The DN1 is a national road, so a road vignette is required: see our guide to the Romania vignette (rovinieta); with an ELEI rental it is already included. For winter trips, read our guide to driving in Romania in winter.
Parking at Bran Castle
There are paid car parks in Bran village near the castle.
Bran Castle tour from Bucharest: what to combine
- Peleș Castle in Sinaia, on the same route along the Prahova Valley. Note that Peleș is closed from 2 November to 1 December 2026. See our Peleș Castle guide for hours and tickets, and our Bran and Peleș in one day itinerary.
- Brașov old town, about 40 minutes away.
- Râșnov fortress.
- Poenari, the real Dracula fortress, via the Transfăgărășan, in summer only.

Visiting Bran Castle with ELEI
Bran is about 3–3.5 hours from Bucharest each way, so it pays to make the logistics easy. With ELEI you can:
- Drive yourself: we deliver a premium rental car to your hotel in Bucharest or to Bucharest Otopeni Airport, with the rovinieta included and the contract and support in English. See the fleet in Bucharest and our car rental guide for Romania.
- Be driven: with our chauffeur service, an English-speaking driver takes you in a Mercedes S-Class or BMW 7 Series, or a Mercedes V-Class for groups, and you spend the journey on the DN1 as a passenger.
