Romania Vignette (Rovinieta) 2026: Prices by Euro Class, Where to Buy It and How to Avoid Fines
In short: the Romania vignette, called the rovinieta, is an electronic road-use fee that every car needs on Romania's national roads and motorways, not only on motorways. There is no sticker: the vignette is linked to your licence plate. Since 1 October 2026 the price depends on your car's Euro emission class. For a typical modern Euro 6 car, a 10-day vignette costs 30 lei (about €6) and a 12-month vignette 254 lei (about €48). Buy it on the official site etoll.ro, in the TollRo app or at a petrol station, before you drive. Driving without one costs a fine of 500 to 1,000 lei, and checks are done by cameras. If you rent from ELEI, the rovinieta is already included.
This guide is for drivers from the UK, the EU and the US, in their own car or a rental. It covers 2026 prices, which period to choose, where to buy the Romania electronic vignette (rovinieta) online without extra fees, how to check it and the separate bridge toll to the Black Sea. Facts last checked on 4 November 2026.
Do I need a Romania vignette?
Yes, if you drive on any national road (drum național) or motorway (autostradă). This surprises most visitors: the vignette in Romania is not only a motorway vignette, it also covers the national roads between towns. Most scenic routes, from the Prahova Valley to Brașov and Sibiu, are national roads, so almost every road trip needs one.
- Your own car with foreign plates: you need a rovinieta, and you should buy it before you enter the country or at the latest before you drive on a national road.
- A rental car: rental cars have Romanian plates, and the vignette is normally the rental company's job. At ELEI it is included in every rental, so you have nothing to buy.
- Motorways and bridges: the rovinieta covers motorways such as the A1 and A2, but bridge tolls, such as the Danube bridge at Fetești on the A2, are paid separately (see below).
The vignette is run by CNAIR, the national road administration. On 1 October 2026 lorries over 3.5 tonnes moved to a distance-based toll (TollRo); this does not affect cars, which still use the time-based rovinieta.
Romania vignette price 2026 by Euro emission class
Since 1 October 2026 (Order MTI 888/2026), the price of the rovinieta for passenger cars depends on how clean the engine is. Prices are in lei and include VAT. Euro amounts are approximate, at about 1 EUR ≈ 5.3 lei, and rounded.
| Validity | Electric | Euro 6 | Euro 4–5 | Euro 0–3 |
| 1 day | 20 lei (≈ €4) | 22 lei (≈ €4) | 26 lei (≈ €5) | 29 lei (≈ €5.50) |
| 10 days | 27 lei (≈ €5) | 30 lei (≈ €6) | 35 lei (≈ €7) | 39 lei (≈ €7) |
| 30 days | 43 lei (≈ €8) | 48 lei (≈ €9) | 55 lei (≈ €10) | 62 lei (≈ €12) |
| 60 days | 68 lei (≈ €13) | 76 lei (≈ €14) | 87 lei (≈ €16) | 99 lei (≈ €19) |
| 12 months | 228 lei (≈ €43) | 254 lei (≈ €48) | 292 lei (≈ €55) | 330 lei (≈ €62) |
Prices from the official tariff in force since 1 October 2026. Until 30 September 2026 every car paid the same price, for example 49.95 lei for 30 days and 262.92 lei for 12 months. A vignette bought before 1 October stays valid until it expires; you do not need to pay the difference.
How to find your car's Euro class
The Euro emission class (Euro 4, Euro 5, Euro 6 and so on) is often shown on your vehicle registration certificate. If it is not printed there, the car's first registration date gives a good indication, since newer cars had to meet stricter standards. Keep one rule in mind: if the Euro class cannot be documented, the highest tariff (Euro 0–3) applies. On a 12-month vignette the difference is worth checking.
Which vignette period should you choose?
The rovinieta is sold for 1 day, 10 days, 30 days, 60 days or 12 months. There is no 7-day vignette in Romania, even though many travellers search for one: for a week-long trip, the 10-day vignette is the one you want.
| Your trip | Vignette to buy | Euro 6 price |
| Driving through Romania in a day, or a single day trip | 1 day | 22 lei |
| Weekend or long weekend (2–4 days) | 10 days (cheaper than two or three 1-day vignettes) | 30 lei |
| One-week road trip through Transylvania | 10 days | 30 lei |
| Two to four weeks, or a summer at the Black Sea | 30 days | 48 lei |
| A longer stay of up to two months | 60 days | 76 lei |
| Living in Romania, or several trips a year | 12 months | 254 lei |
Unsure how long you will stay? Choose the longer period: the difference is small, and a lapsed vignette means a fine.
Romania motorway vignette: where to buy it online and in person
- Official website, etoll.ro: the online shop of CNAIR's electronic toll system. Pay by card and receive the confirmation by email. This is the best option for a foreign car, because you can buy before you leave home.
- TollRo app: CNAIR's app, useful if you want to buy and check vignettes on your phone.
- Petrol stations: most petrol stations in Romania sell the rovinieta at the till. Many self-pay terminals sell it too.
- SMS to 7500: from Romanian mobile numbers only.
- Other websites: some are authorised distributors, but unknown "vignette" sites often add a service fee. If a site charges more than the table above, use the official channel.
How to buy the rovinieta online, step by step
- Go to the official site etoll.ro or open the TollRo app, and choose the vignette for passenger cars.
- Enter the country of registration and the licence plate exactly as it appears on the car, without spaces or extra characters. You may also be asked for the VIN (chassis number), which is on the registration certificate.
- Select the Euro emission class of your car and the validity period.
- Choose the start date. If you buy for today, the vignette starts the moment the payment is confirmed.
- Pay by card, keep the confirmation email and, ideally, a screenshot on your phone.
A wrong plate number is the most common mistake: the cameras read the plate, not your receipt, so check it twice.
When does the vignette become valid?
If you buy a rovinieta for the current day, it is valid from the moment the payment is confirmed, not from midnight. You can also choose a future start date, the easiest option if you buy before your trip.
Since 1 January 2026, Romanian-registered vehicles may pay for the current day until 24:00 the next day. Do not rely on this with a foreign car. Buy the vignette before you enter Romania, or before you drive on any national road.
How to check if a Romania vignette is valid
On the official site, enter the plate number and, where asked, the VIN (chassis series). The result shows whether a valid vignette exists and when it expires. Check it:
- after you buy, to make sure the plate was entered correctly;
- if you bought from a petrol station or a third-party website and want to confirm it was registered;
- if you drive a borrowed car.
Rovinieta fines and camera checks
Driving a passenger car on a national road or motorway without a valid rovinieta is fined 500 to 1,000 lei (about €94 to €189), under Law 141/2025. Checks are automatic: cameras on national roads read licence plates and compare them with the vignette database, and traffic police also check vehicles on the road.
Fetești bridge toll: driving to the Black Sea
On the A2 motorway from Bucharest to Constanța and the Black Sea coast, you cross the Danube on the bridges at Fetești–Cernavodă. This crossing has its own toll, which is separate from the rovinieta: a valid vignette does not cover it.
- Price: 19 lei per crossing for a car in 2026 (about €3.60).
- Where to pay: online, at petrol stations along the A2, at the bridge, or by SMS with Romanian plates: text POD followed by the plate number to 7577.
- Deadline: until 24:00 the day after the crossing.
- Fine: an unpaid crossing is fined 190 lei.
The drive from Bucharest to the coast takes around 2.5 hours on the A2. For autumn and winter trips, read our guide to driving in Romania in winter before you set off.
Renting a car? The rovinieta is already included
If you fly into Bucharest and rent a car, the vignette is not your problem. At ELEI the rovinieta is included in every rental, already active on the car's Romanian plate, so there is nothing to buy, no Euro class to look up and no paperwork. Bridge tolls, such as the Fetești toll on the way to the Black Sea, are paid separately by you; since our cars have Romanian plates, you can pay by SMS in a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a vignette for Romania if I only use national roads?
Yes. The rovinieta is required on national roads as well as motorways, so almost any trip between towns needs one.
How much is the Romania vignette in 2026?
It depends on the Euro class. For a Euro 6 car: 22 lei for 1 day, 30 lei for 10 days, 48 lei for 30 days, 76 lei for 60 days and 254 lei for 12 months. Older cars pay more, electric cars less.
Is there a 7-day vignette in Romania?
No. The periods are 1 day, 10 days, 30 days, 60 days and 12 months. For a one-week trip, buy the 10-day vignette.
Where can I buy the Romania vignette online?
On the official site etoll.ro or in CNAIR's TollRo app. You can buy before you travel and choose a start date. Avoid unknown websites that add a service fee.
Is there a sticker for the windscreen?
No. The Romanian vignette is fully electronic and linked to your licence plate. Keep the payment confirmation in case you need it.
Can I buy the vignette at the Romanian border?
Most petrol stations in Romania sell it, but buying online before you leave is simpler: you are covered from the first kilometre on a national road.
Does the vignette cover the A2 motorway to the Black Sea?
It covers the motorway itself, but not the Danube bridge at Fetești, which costs 19 lei per crossing for a car and is paid separately.
Is the rovinieta included in a rental car?
With ELEI, yes, in every rental. With other companies, ask before you book. The Fetești bridge toll is paid by the driver.
